Pick Your Move!

This job aid digital and print document was designed for K-12 international school teachers to provide a quick, bite-sized reference to the the co-teaching coaching moves based on the Student Centered Coaching model by Dianne Sweeney.

This project emerged after the school adopted the Student Centered Coaching model to support teachers, increase teacher retention, and promote high impact, inclusive teaching strategies.  This project aimed to clarify misunderstandings of the coaching model and co-teaching techniques observed by the instructional coach and other stakeholders.

Hi there, I’m Jenny Malloy and this is Pick Your Move!

I designed, developed, and delivered this bite-sized job aid handout.  I designed this digital and print A4 document using Canva.  The audience was K-12 international school teachers participating in instructional coaching cycles following the Student Centered Coaching model by Dianne Sweeney.

This project emerged after the school adopted the Student Centered Coaching model to support teachers, increase teacher retention, and promote high impact, inclusive teaching strategies.  Coaching around inclusive strategies was identified as a need after an influx of bilingual and multilingual learners enrolled in the school.  Some misunderstandings of the coaching model and co-teaching techniques were observed by the instructional coach and identified as an area of need based on reflections of the roll-out and the first round of coaching cycles.

As a solution to lack of clarity around the coaching model and coaching moves, it was determined that a digital and physical copy of the Pick Your Move! job aid would be provided to all teachers engaging in coaching cycles.

The main objective of this document was for learners to be able to recognize and select the most appropriate coaching move to utilize during co-teaching sessions with the instructional coach.

A catchy title was selected to gain attention. Each of the six Student Centered Coaching moves were named and defined on the document. A supporting vector graphic was included to complement the descriptions. High contrast colors and sans serif font for the description text were selected intentionally to promote accessibility.

In order to enhance retention and transfer, teachers were given a physical copy of the job aid in their planning meetings with the instructional coach. A copy was also emailed and linked in the weekly planning meeting agendas.

Feedback was gathered anecdotally by the instructional coach through interactions with the teachers in their meetings and co-teaching sessions. There was a noticeable increase in teacher recognition and familiarity with the coaching moves as well as their ability to choose the most appropriate move for their personal goals. Additionally, based on meetings with the principal, teachers were better able to engage in coaching cycles in a meaningful way and felt supported in their roles.

Overall, the job aid was a successful addition to the coaching program. Future data on teacher turnover and student achievement should also be analyzed to determine how well the coaching program as a whole supports teacher and student success.
